Achilles hurt after running

Achilles tendonitis is a common symptom in runners who begin to feel pain in the tendons from behind the calves to the ankles. Remember that this tendon is inflamed, as “flame” means inflammation.

Tendons can become inflamed and cause pain. People with Achilles tendonitis may have pain in the center of the tendon, about 2 inches above the calcaneus, or where the tendon enters the calcaneus.

What is the cause of Achilles tendonitis?

Achilles tendonitis is caused by repeated stress on the tendons. As mentioned earlier, the Achilles tendon can be a lot of pressure, but it can be frustrating if you do it too quickly or if you overstress the tendon over and over again.

Other risk factors that can lead to Achilles tendonitis include:

  • Wrong training progression with a rapid increase in speed, mileage, and uphill running.
  • Tight calf muscles can pull too much and put extra strain on the Achilles.
  • You can have an additional bone growth where the Achilles tendon is attached to the heel.
  • Reduced total lower extremity strength can lead to higher loads on the Achilles due to compensations. Strength work is KEY for this reason! Activating the calf, thigh, and hip muscles (especially the gluteal muscles) will be super important!
  • Rapid change of footwear with less shock absorption or heel drop can lead to extra stress on the Achilles heel.
  • Running on your forefoot can lead to increased stress factors on the Achilles.

What are the symptoms?

There are different symptoms associated with Achilles tendonitis, and some of the most common are:

  • Pain and stiffness along the Achilles tendon
  • Pain along the back of the tendon or heel
  • Deteriorating with activity
  • Severe pain in the Achilles tendon the day after exercise

How is Achilles tendonitis diagnosed?

Doctors look for the following signs during the test to determine if a person has Achilles tendonitis:

  • Swelling along the back of the tendon or heel
  • Thickening or enlargement of the Achilles tendon
  • There is an osteophyte at the bottom of the tendon behind the heel (this is the insertion tendon)
  • Tendon point sensitivity
  • Pain in the middle of the tendon pain behind the heel.
    Limited freedom of movement of the ankle, significantly reduced ability to bend the foot
  • Strength evaluation
  • Painful heel lift
